Madeira Plunge - Madeira´s New Year charity dive.
Whilst 2015 was the first Madeira Plunge, the UNOX Nieuwjaarsduik in Holland celebrated its 55th year with 45,000 participants worldwide, 40,000 of which in Holland alone.
Madeira Plunge has chosen to raise funds for Acreditar, a Portuguese charity, which supports children with cancer and their families and also acts locally in Madeira.

Madeira Plunge
The Madeira Plunge was born thanks to two Dutch people living on Madeira Island, Gerry Sluiter and Don Amaro (both founders of the Holland House Madeira), who wanted to introduce the Dutch tradition of the Nieuwsjaarduik (New Year's Dive), an Unox event that takes place 1st January each year, and has been going on for 25 years in the Netherlands with 50,000 participants throughout the country.
Both Holland House Madeira and Nature Meetings, together with Andrew Zino, organised the first event (1-1-2015) in Funchal, Ponta Gorda - Possas do Governador with the support of FrenteMar who manages the swimming complexes of Funchal, and Unox (Unilever) who supplied the beanies and soups. Madeira Plunge aims to be a fun event to start the new year in Madeira, both for locals and visitors, whilst raising funds for a charitable cause - Acreditar.
Locals often have an "end of year" swim on the last day of the year and start the year with a "new year swim". Average sea temperatures in Madeira make the destination a great location for a "new year plunge". We look forward to your participation on 1 January to contribute to make the Madeira Plunge an even greater success. |
